IoT Evolution with Wi-Fi HaLow SoC

Wi-Fi HaLow enables high data rates for long distance communication.

Newracom introduces the industry’s first system on a chip (SoC) that is compliant with the IEEE 802.11ah Wi-Fi HaLow standard, the NRC7292.

Wi-Fi HaLow is an optimised Wi-Fi solution for internet of things (IoT) devices. Operating in the Sub 1GHz license-exempt band, it offers a much greater range and material penetration when compared to 2.4GHz and 5GHz technologies. It can support low data rate sensors as well as high data rate  surveillance camera applications. The protocol’s power-saving mechanisms greatly reduce power consumption and increase battery life.

The NRC7292 includes application processing and networking capabilities with a fully integrated radio transceiver. It minimizes the PCB size, requires minimal external circuitries, and enables fast time-to-market.

Along with the host-less mode of operation, NRC7292 can be used either as a standalone device or a slave to a host processor through the serial peripheral interface (SPI) or universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) interface. This is enabled with the dual embedded processor. In addition, it can support both Station and Access Point roles.

It has fully Integrated on-chip 11ah modem, RF transceiver, dual Cortex processors, and memory. Low power modes of operation are available and security is enhanced. Data rates up to 15Mbps with 1/2/4 MHz bandwidth is supported.

The RF transceiver is a complete radio front-end optimized for Sub 1GHz band and it has fully integrated pre-power amplifiers. It has the capability to support various commercial external finite element machine (FEM) devices along with various peripheral interfaces.
