Wireless charging is now being adopted at a fast rate over the last few years. Now, with the ability to transmit more power, wireless charging is being implemented in a lot of consumer-grade products such as mobile phones, wireless earbuds, smartwatches, etc. The launch of Qi 1.3 has improved the security, efficiency and power delivery rate which have in turn increased the adoption of the wireless charging techniques.
To aid the adoption of wireless charging and help designers overcome the challenges of wireless power transfer and serve key application requirements, Infineon Technologies has launched the WLC1115 transmitter controller ICs. It is the first addition to the WLC family of controllers for inductive wireless charging. WLC1115 is a Qi v1.3.2 certified MP A11 power transmitter reference solution. The targeted applications include smartphones, smartwatches, speakers, as well as industrial or healthcare accessories.
“The WLC1115 transmitter controller IC and companion reference design for wireless charging is the ideal choice for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications that demand state-of-the-art Qi-standard compliance,” said Ajay Srikrishna, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Wired Connectivity Solutions Product Line at Infineon. “As inductive wireless charging standards evolve, our programmable solution will offer the flexibility to scale higher power levels and allow OEMs to materialize differentiated features while remaining Qi-compatible.”
According to the company, the WLC1115 is a Qi-compliant, highly integrated, and fully configurable 15 W transmitter controller IC for wireless charging solutions. It supports a wide input voltage from 4.5W to 24V along with multipath voltage- and current-based ASK demodulation. The IC includes a USB-PD/PPS sink, DC/DC controller, gate drivers for DC/DC, a full-bridge inverter, sensing peripherals, and configurable flash memory. Similar to most Qi. 1.3 certified solutions, also feature safety measures such as a high-side current-sense amplifier and adaptive Foreign Object Detection (FOD) via Q-factor, resonant frequency, and power loss. WLC1115 also includes comprehensive protection features for UVLO, OVP, OCP, and OTP that are programmable.
